One of the Wu School masters, he failed the imperial examinations ten times before giving up on office entirely. He paints gardens, writes inscriptions for other people's paintings, and has strong opinions about how a stroke should begin.

A Suzhou garden is walled, so it borrows: a distant pagoda framed by a doorway, a neighbour's treetop seen over a wall. The garden is designed so that sightlines land on something worth looking at from every position.
